WALNUT CREEK, Calif.  University of Arizona swimmer Cory Chitwood was named the Pac-10’s Swimmer of the Month for his performances in January, announced today by Commissioner Larry Scott.

Chitwood, a sophomore from Union, Ky., turned in six first-place finishes during the month of January to spark the third-ranked Wildcats to wins over No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 California and No. 23 Southern Methodist.

Chitwood guided Arizona to two come-from-behind road victories over the Cardinal and Golden Bears in consecutive days.  Against Stanford, Chitwood won the 200 backstroke over SU’s Eugene Godsoe with a time of 1:44.04.  He then followed it up with a runner-up finish in the 100 back (48.34) and a fourth-place finish in the 200 I.M.

The following day vs. California, Chitwood virtually repeated his performance, placing first in the 200 back (1:44.74), and turning in runner-up finishes in the 100 back (48.30), 400 I.M. (3:53.84) and 200 medley relay (1:28.37).

Facing the top-ranked Longhorns at home, Chitwood swam on two first-place relays and had three top-three individual finishes.  UA won both the 200 medley relay (1:28.97) and 400 medley relay (3:14.56).

In terms of top times nationally, Chitwood is first in the 200 back, second in the 100 back and third in both the 200 and 400 individual medley’s.
