ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-Arizona's men's golf team opened play in the 2002 NCAA West Regional Thursday with a first-round score of 4-over-par 292 at the UNM Championship Course. The team total lands the Wildcats in a tie for seventh, just seven strokes off the lead.
Individually, junior Ricky Barnes led the way for Arizona in Thursday's opening round, the 6-foot-1-inch junior from Stockton, Calif., posted an 18-hole score of 2-under-par 70. The subpar round is Barnes' 16th of the season. Barnes sits two strokes off the pace set by round one individual leader Jason Hartwick of Texas.
Hartwick led the Longhorns to first place after day one. Texas carded a team total of 3-under-par 285, while San Diego State occupies second place at 289 (+1). Fresno State, Minnesota and UNLV are tied for third at 290 (+2).
Reid Hatley carded an opening round of 1-over-par 73 to position himself in a tie for 27th place with eight other golfers. Sophomore Chris Nallen, who currently holds a subpar stroke average, stands tied for 36th after shooting 2-over-par 74 on day one of the 54-hole tournament.
Also scoring for the Wildcats Thursday was freshman Kipp Riehle, who posted a 3-over 75 and is tied for 57th. Andy Connell of Denver, Colo., rounded out the Arizona lineup and is tied for 77th place at 4-over-par 76.
Second round action gets underway Friday at the UNM Championship Course with tee times beginning at 7:12 a.m. MDT. The top ten teams and two individuals in each of the three regional sites advance to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, on May 29-June 1. Arizona has won the NCAA Regional five times in its history (1989, '91, '92, '93 and 2000).
