TUCSON - San Jose State kept Drake winless this year with a come-from-behind 7-6 victory in Saturday action of Arizona's round-robin Worth Invitational softball tournament.
Drake's Brook Buchanan was hit by a pitch to open the first, moved to second on Lauren Smith's single and scored on Jamie Waterman's single to give the Bulldogs a short-lived lead. San Jose State tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Waterman mishandled a ground ball thatt would have been the third out and allowed a run to cross.
Drake picked up a run on Lauren Smith's RBI double, and SJSU picked one up on Veronica Ramos' RBI double to tie it after three, 2-2.
Drake scored four unearned runs with three hits and two Spartan errors in the fourth, keyed by Lauren Smith's three-run triple, and Smith scored when the catcher missed the throw attempting to get the preceding runner at the plate.
In the bottom of the fifth Drake pitcher Molly Henry gave up three successive hits then walked a runner to force in one SJSU run. After a force at the plate, Tiffany Finlay hit an infield single to drive in another run to cut the lead to 6-4.
The Spartans took the lead off Drake reliever Michele Markham in the sixth, with a walk, hit batter, walk and three-run double by Diana Lilly.
