TUCSON, Ariz. - The fourth-ranked Arizona volleyball team dispatched no.23 UC Santa Barbara, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in its final match of the regular season. The Wildcats scored a 30-22, 30-19, 30-27 victory over the Gauchos to win the Four Points University Plaza Thanksgiving Tournament championship. The win boosted Arizona's record to a 21-4 overall for the regular season, UCSB fell to 17-13.
As a team, the Wildcats dominated nearly the entire match. Arizona out-hit the Gauchos .348-.143, out-dug them 71-47 and out-blocked them at the net 8-4.
Individually, Lisa Rutledge led all players with 16 kills on .333 hitting and also posted 10 digs. Seniors Jill Talbot and Dana Burkholder, playing in their final regular season match in McKale Center, both fell just short of triple-doubles. Talbot tallied 10 kills, 15 digs and eight assists, while Burkholder dished out 44 assists and recorded 17 digs and seven kills in the win. Classmate Erin Sebbas finished the match with nine kills on .350 hitting. Christina Frost, playing for the injured Shannon Torregrosa, filled in nicely for the Wildcats with 12 kills on .276 hitting.
Sebbas, Rutledge and Talbot were all named to the all-tournament team and Burkholder picked up her third Tournament MVP of the season. Joining the four Arizona players in post tournament honors were UCSB's Erica Menzel and Danielle Bauer, San Diego State's Katie Magnuson and Olympia Hughes of Denver.
The Wildcats will wait until Monday before learning where and when they will be playing in the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The selection show, which can be seen live on Fox Sports Net Arizona and Fox Sports West 2, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Arizona, noon on the West Coast.
