TUCSON, Ariz. -- Jenny Gladding threw a no-hitter and Mackenzie Vandergeest broke open a scoreless tie with a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to give No. 2-ranked Arizona a victory over Creighton, 3-0.
Gladding threw her second no-hitter in four days. She no-hit the Indiana State Sycamores Saturday. She struck out eight against Creighton and walked one in the seventh to spoil a bid for a perfect game.
Vandergeest's homer was only the third UA hit off Creighton pitcher Jenny Hunt (1-1),the Wildcats' lower hit total of the season.
UA blew an early scoring opportunity when Creighton recorded an odd 1-2-5-6 double play on a ground ball by Leneah Manuma in the first, catching Nicole Giordano off the bag at third and retiring Toni Mascarenas heading back to second.
Lauren Bauer made two consecutive plays in centerfield to help UA's defense in the fourth, going to the fence to catch Stacey Rybar's liner and running up for a sliding catch of Jenny Hunt's sinking blooper.
Hunt intentionally walked Manuma in the sixth after Giordano singled with
one out and was sacrificed to second by Mascarenas, then Vandergeest hit
the first pitch over the right-field fence for her 12th home run of the
