KINGSTON, R.I. ?- Head Coach Dave Rubio became the all-time winningest coach in Arizona volleyball history today when his No. 20 Wildcats swept Connecticut (30-27, 30-22, 30-12) at the Rhode Island Invitational. The win was Rubio’s 259th at the helm of the Wildcats, surpassing Rosie Wegrich’s 258 victories from 1977-1991.
“We started sluggish, but got much better by the third game,” Rubio said. “Our middles played terrific; they hit over .800.”
Arizona out-hit the Huskies .362 to .043 and out-blocked them 12 to 3.5 in a match where all 12 Wildcats saw playing time. The Wildcats also nearly doubled UConn in kills (47 to 25).
Senior Kim Glass led all players with 12 kills, nine digs and six blocks. Sophomore Dominique Lamb added a career-high 10 kills with zero errors on 12 attempts for a .833 hitting percentage. She also added four blocks.
Senior Bre Ladd had her best match of the season, finishing with eight kills and no errors for a .800 hitting percentage. She also tallied four blocks. Junior Kristina Baum matched her career high of six blocks on the match. Freshman Brittany Leonard finished with a team-high nine digs.
Sophomore Amy Dyck dished out 34 assists on the match. “Amy played well,” Rubio noted. “With every opportunity, she’s going to get better and feel more comfortable as the starter.”
