TUCSON--Lovie Jung hit her 11th home run of the year with two outs in the bottom of the fifth off Washington's second of three pitchers, Leslie Scott, to give Arizona a 1-0 lead and all the runs the No. 2-ranked Wildcats needed to beat the No. 10 Huskies.
UA reliever Jenny Gladding struck out nine in five innings and weathered some jams to earn her 15th victory against four defeats. The Wildcats improved to 34-4 overall and 3-0 in Pac-10 play. Washington is 32-10 and 1-2 in league action.
Washington's Becky Simpson doubled off first baseman Leneah Manuma's glove with one out in the third, and moved to third on a bunt single by Rita Roach. Gladding, who came on in relief of All-American Jennie Finch in the top of the inning, struck out Jaime Clark and Kristen Rivera to end the threat.
Crystal Farley and Lovie Jung hit one-out singles to put a runner in scoring position in Arizona's half of the third. First baseman Traci Tawney mishandled Courtney Fossatti's grounder to load the bases. Washington changed pitchers, bringing in Leslie Scott, who struck out Manuma and got Finch to pop out.
Arizona shortstop Jung made a heads-up play to help UA get out a jam in the top of the fifth. With Steph Nicholson on second, Roach hit an infield single, but Jung alertly wheeled and threw to third to get Nicholson in a run-down between the bag and third to record the third out in a 6-5-2-6 play.
Gladding hit pinch-hitter Courtney Jeffries to open the top of the Huskies seventh, and Steph Nicholson moved re-entered runner Megan Owen to second with a sacrifice bunt. Gladding struck out pinch-hitter Amanda Oleson for the second out, then walked Simpson to put runners on first and second. But Roach popped up to end the game.
The Huskies had three hits off both Finch and Gladding. The Huskies' Scott took the loss and dropped to 6-4.
