Cats in the Polls: The Wildcats are 40th in the April 11 edition of the
WingspanBank.com poll. Arizona had held down a top-25 ranking for the first
seven weeks of the year that was based on voting by the coaches. UA senior
Michelle Gough is No. 89 in the latest singles ranking. A win over then
ninth-ranked Jewel Peterson of Southern California, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, and 17
victories highlights her resume. UA's duo of senior Michelle Gough and
junior Sophie Regnier cracked the doubles rankings at No. 38 highlighted by
12 victories. Arizona is also ranked fifth in its region as it began spring
play. In addition, three UA players find themselves in the singles poll:
senior Michelle Gough (No. 3), Larocque (No. 19) and Marino (No. 24). On the doubles side, Larocque and Marino are ranked No. 12 in the poll.
Double Vision: The Wildcats are 6-1 when they win the doubles point. The lone loss was a 6-1 defeat against California (4/13). Of those wins, UA has swept the doubles contests twice versus Northern Arizona (2/4) and Oregon (2/9). On the other hand, Arizona is 0-12 when it fails to capture the doubles point.
Stanford (April 14): The Cardinal continued its undefeated season defeating Arizona 7-0. The win was No. 34 in a row for Stanford over the Wildcats. UA was able to take two sets in singles play. Arizona junior Laresa Marino and freshman Perrine Pernin forced a third set in their matches. Marino fell to No. 22 Lauren Barnikow, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, while Pernin was upended by 33rd-ranked Keiko Tokuda, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
California (April 13): Arizona earned victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to secure the doubles point for the first time in six matches. Unfortunately, the Wildcats would drop their first contest when winning the doubles point falling to the ninth-ranked Golden Bears, 6-1. Cal swept the six singles battles while losing only one set at the No.1 spot. Arizona freshman Debbie Larocque battled No. 46 Anita Kurimay in a three set defeat, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. UA senior Joanna Buczkowska had to default due to injury in the No. 6 match.
Texas (April 11): Texas junior Kaysie Smashey battled back from a set down to outlast Arizona freshman Perrine Pernin, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1, giving the eleventh-ranked Longhorns a 4-3 victory. The win was the third straight for UT over the Wildcats. UA fell to 1-4 in matches decided by a point this season. UT secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The squads split the six singls contests producing the final score. Arizona freshman Debbie Larocque continued to hold down the team lead in victories recording win No. 22 of the year over No. 34 Uhlirova, 6-2, 0-6, 7-5. Wildcat junior Sophie Regnier won her fifth match in a row notching a straight sets victory over Michelle Krinke, 6-3, 6-3.
