TUCSON, Ariz. - Fall Training Camp Notes...

... The University of Arizona football team has two more days of training camp left on the schedule, with two practices on Thursday and a single practice Friday afternoon to close camp. The Wildcats will scrimmage Thursday night in Arizona Stadium, but the scrimmage is closed to the public.

... Mackovic had some animated words for the team, emphasizing the importance of working hard every minute on the field. "I know they're tired, but no one is going to feel sorry for them. We have to keep plugging along. Even though we've had a few injuries, we cannot afford to stop practicing the way that we need to in order to be a championship football team. We have to work hard, and we can still do that without people getting hurt," he said...

... Wednesday's offensive injury report: "Keoki (Fraser) rolled his ankle a little bit, so he probably will miss the scrimmage tomorrow. But, we are going light on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, so he has several days to get back and get ready for our first game," he said. "So, Reggie (Sampay) will play center, and Kili (Lefotu) also will work at center tomorrow"...

... Wednesday's defensive injury report: "(Defensive ends) Javier Martinez and Marcus Smith are dinged a little bit. Javier hurt his ribs, and Marcus twisted his back, but we are hopeful that they will get back to practice tomorrow," Mackovic added...

... Junior wide receiver Andrae Thurman has been one of the team's bright spots during training camp, and Mackovic has been impressed with his play thus far. "Andrae has done an excellent job of stepping up. He has moved into the "X" receiver spot that Malosi Leonard and Brandon Marshall played last year. He really has stepped into the position, and he's done everything. Another big plus is that he has shown some leadership," Mackovic said...

... In the early morning practice session Wednesday, the defense knocked down seven passes, and freshman defensive back Gary Shepard had an interception in skeleton and team passing drills...

... Senior quarterback Jason Johnson completed 6-of-10 passes in skeleton drills and completed 4-of-6 passes in the team drills, including a 45-yard touchdown strike to junior wide receiver Lance Relford... Redshirt freshman Nic Costa had a rough morning, as his first four attempts were broken up by the defensive backs... Freshman Ryan O'Hara had a good stretch in skeleton passing drills, completing four consecutive passes, and he finished 5-of-10 combined in skeleton and team passing drills...

... In the morning punting drill versus a full rush, freshman Danny Baugher had five punts for a 46.0-yard average, and junior Ramey Peru punted four times for a 43.7 average...

... After analyzing the film from Tuesday's afternoon scrimmage, Mackovic explained that the defensive and offensive units need to continue to make more improvements every practice. "Our pursuit angles were not what they needed to be on defense. Offensively, we didn't throw and catch the ball very well, and our crossing routes were not very good," he said...

... Mackovic made a position change Wednesday afternoon by moving junior walk-on Mike Schwertley from tight end to defensive end. "We moved him to defensive end where he showed a natural burst. He was working with the first unit for a little bit and had a sack today," he said...
