TUCSON, Ariz.- Less than a week after their last event, Arizona Men's Golf will send their JV squad to The Cactus Thaw, hosted by Western New Mexico. The event will be contested at the Silver City Golf Course, a par 72, 6,237 yard layout and host nine teams for the tournament. In addition, four women's teams will partake in the tournament.
As a team, Arizona did not compete in the event last year but seven Wildcat players did enter the tournament as individuals. Mark Lamb was the top Arizona finisher; he placed second with a score of 141 (-1), 2 strokes behind winner Marcus Molina from host Western New Mexico. Molina's 139 (-3) lead his team to a comfortable victory. At three over par, the Mustangs cruised to a 22 stroke victory.
John Kostis, who finished tied for 12th in the 2008 Cactus Thaw, Peter Ireland, tied for 18th and Tom Conran, tied for 58th, will all be competing this year as well. Also in the line up for the Cats are freshmen Phil Bagdade and Kenji Hernandez.
Competing against a field in which all 16 opponents were varsity teams, Arizona's JV team struggled in a last place finish in the Arizona Intercollegiate February 2 and 3. The Cats will look to improve against a softer field. The nine team field includes: Western New Mexico, Montana St.-Billings, Arizona JV, Grand Canyon JV, Scottsdale CC, Mesa CC, South Mountain CC, New Mexico St. JV and Chandler-Gilbert CC.
