WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Arizona junior Taryne Mowatt has been named the Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for her performance this past weekend, the conference office announced today.

Mowatt gave up three runs over three complete-game victories in the circle against Oregon State and Oregon.  In doing so, she improved her record to 26-7 on the season and lowered her ERA to 1.62.  Even more impressive is Mowatt’s 9-1 mark against Pac-10 opponents with a 1.20 ERA.

The junior from Corona, Calif., opened the home series with a rocky first inning against the Beavers, in which she allowed one run on two hits.  However, over the next six innings she held OSU hitless and led Arizona to a 3-1 victory.

The next night, Mowatt duplicated her one-run, two-hit outing from Friday with a 4-1 win over Oregon.  Mowatt took the pressure off the Wildcat defense that did not commit an error all weekend by striking out 15 Ducks.  That result lifted Mowatt to the sixth-best single season strikeout mark in school history.  Only Alicia Hollowell’s four years at UA and Jennie Finch’s Honda Award-winning senior season stand ahead of Mowatt’s punchout total.

Sunday’s contest was more of the same, as Mowatt limited Oregon to one run on four hits as UA cruised to a 9-1, six-inning victory.

On the weekend, Mowatt tallied 32 strikeouts in 20 innings pitched, has now struck out 331 opposing hitters and ranks seventh on the NCAA’s all-time list for strikeouts per seven innings pitched.

This is Mowatt’s third Pac-10 weekly honor of the year and the sixth citation of her career.

The Wildcats (34-9, 10-2 Pac-10) have a two-game lead in the conference standings going into this weekend’s series in the Bay Area against Cal and Stanford.
