Tucson, Ariz. (Dec. 4) - The University of Arizona women's gymnastics team took a big leap towards the 2004 season on Thursday, Dec. 4, in its first bars and beam intra-squad scrimmage of the preseason.
The Wildcats competed in a series of rotations against each other and were given a simulated competition score that was judged according to NCAA competition regulations for each bar and beam routine.
"This was a very good learning experience for our gymnasts," head coach Bill Ryden said. "Each gymnast received a lot of information that they can use toward improving their routines for the season. It is good for this team to perform in front of a judge and in competition leotards to help get some of their nerves out."
In the first series on bars, juniors Monica Bisordi and Stevie Fanning led the team with scores of 9.800. Senior Sheehan Lemley, senior Andi McCabe and freshman Aubrey Taylor tallied marks of 9.750, and junior Jamie Duce hit a bars score of 9.700. Junior Jamie Schell led the team on bars with a score of 9.850 in her third series.
On beam, Lemley posted a high of 9.800 in the first series, with Fanning (9.750) and McCabe (9.700) hitting each of their routines. Bisordi, who competed last year at the NCAA Championships as an all-arounder, led the team with a score of 9.900 in her second beam performance.
"All of our gymnasts showed that they have good stuff and are able to hit their routines," Ryden said. "Today showed that we have a deep team on beam, but we have to pay attention to details to improve."
Arizona will hold a vault and floor intra-squad scrimmage on Friday, Dec. 19. The Wildcats open the 2004 season in East Lansing, Mich., on Friday, Jan. 4, 2004, when they take on Michigan St., LSU and Western Michigan.
