AUBURN, Wash. ?- The Arizona women’s golf team carded a 15-over-par 303 and currently sits in a four-way-tie for seventh place after the first round of the NCAA West Regional at the Washington National Golf Course.

If the tournament were to end today, the Wildcats would claim the eight and final spot necessary to advance to the NCAA Championships.

Leading the Wildcats in the individual category was Adriana Zwanck who posted a first round score of 73 (+1) and is tied for 13th place.  After bogeying the 15th hole, Zwanck was able to birdie back-to-back holes and keep herself in the top 15.

“Obviously we are not where we wanted to be after today, but I’m not sure if we ever get off to a great start,” said head coach Greg Allen.  “Tomorrow is going to be our most important day of the year.  We need to take care of business and give ourselves a shot on Saturday.”

Playing on her home course, Washington senior Paige Mackenzie is in first place after carding a four-under-par 68.  Mackenzie helped the Huskies to a 288 (E) score, and a share of first place with UCLA.

Purdue posted a one-over-par 289 and sits in third place, followed by Georgia and Arkansas.

Only one stroke separates Arizona teammates Sommer Scholl and Cassandra Kirkland.  Scholl carded a 75 (+3) and sits in a tie for 32nd place, while Kirkland (76) is tied for 39th place.  Kirkland was able to put together a strong finish, shooting par on 14 of her final 15 holes.

Freshman Amanda Wilson posted a seven-over-par 79 and is in 76th place followed by fellow classmate Lauren Espinosa who shot an 80 (+8).

“I think there were some nerves today, anytime you have four freshmen playing in their first West Regional ever there are bound to be some nerves.  We just need to stay mentally tough and we’ll be aright,” Allen said.

In accordance with the NCAA rules, the top eight teams at each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 23-26, in Columbus, Ohio.

Round two of the 2006 NCAA West Regional will begin tomorrow morning with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m.
