TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The Arizona softball team was announced as the second seed overall in the NCAA field of 64 teams on Sunday.  The Wildcats also learned that they will host a regional for the fourth consecutive year, and 13th time in the last 15 seasons.

“Obviously, we’re playing well right now, and that’s exactly what you want to be doing this time of year,” Arizona head coach Mike Candrea.  “We will be hosting a competitive field.

“I know that Auburn and Ohio State are both good teams, and we’ll certainly be doing our homework on Marist in the coming days.  However, the key for us, as it has been all year, is that we need to take care of business from our end.”

Among the teams visiting Tucson for the Thursday through Saturday, double-elimination regional: Auburn, Ohio State and Marist.

Arizona, winners of its last 10 games, will face Marist in a first-round match-up on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. (MST).

ESPN2 will televise Saturday’s 3 p.m. (MST) regional championship contest, as well as the 5 p.m. (MST) “if” game.

Marist is the only automatic qualifier in the group, as the Red Foxes defeated Fairfield in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship just hours ago to assure themselves a bid.  This will also be Marist’s first NCAA Tournament appearance.

Arizona has never faced any of its fellow regional teams in the past, but defeated Ohio State earlier in the year 5-1 in Palm Springs on Feb. 25.

The Wildcats finished in sole possession of second place in the Pac-10, with a 44-9 overall record and 16-5 in-conference clip.

Seven of the Pac-10’s eight teams were selected to the field, three of which (Arizona, UCLA and Oregon State) will play host to three other teams.

The Wildcats, who may have very well played the nation’s toughest schedule, went 27-9 against teams that made the tournament.

Tickets will be first made available to Arizona season ticket holders on Monday morning at 9 a.m.  Season ticket holders can purchase full-session seats at the McKale Ticket Office or by calling (520) 621-CATS.
