The first day of play in the 2010 Cal Nike Invitational was a bit of a roller coster for the Wildcats. In doubles play junior Natasha Marks and freshman Susan McRann lost 8-3 to Emma Verbenne and Lais Ogata of The University of Nevada, Reno in the gold division. In the blue doubles division juniors Sarah Landsman and Debora Castany lost 8-4 to Kelly Lambie and Maggie McGeorge of Santa Clara University.
In singles play Sarah lost to Claire Soper with a score of 6-3 and 7-5. In her consolation match Sarah beat Callie Craig of BYU 6-3, 6-1. Natasha lost her first match against Catherine Isip 6-2, 6-2 but won her consolation match versus Christina Goehl of Pacific University with a score of 6-2, 6-2. Debora lost her first match against Molly Aloi 6-3, 6-4, as well as her consolation match with Melissa McQueen with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
The highlight of the day for the Wildcats was the first collegiate match of freshman Susan McRann. Susan won her first match with a score of 7-5, 6-1. She competed against Nikaelli Maciel of Pacific University. Susan lost the first place seed in her second match against Deborah Armstrong 6-2, 6-1.
The Cats enter their second day of play on Saturday, Sept. 25 riding on the high of a first win and the desire to improve standings in the tournament.
