TUCSON - Sophomore guard Candice Warthen, a member of the University of Arizona Wildcat women's basketball team, was named the Bank of the West Pac-12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday.
Warthen, earning her first career conference honor, led Arizona to two road wins, averaging 24.5 points per game, to officially open the 2011-12 season. She scored a career high 36 points, including five three pointers, in the win over Georgia State, just three points shy of tying the school record for points in a game (39).
On the weekend, she shot 53.3 percent from the field, 54.4 percent from three-point range and 84.6 percent from the free throw line. In 65 minutes of play, she dished out seven assists and only caused three turnovers. Her five made threes against Georgia State were also a career high.
