TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona used the long ball to jump all over in-state rival ASU early and then cruised to a 12-6 victory Thursday evening.
K'Lee Arredondo hit a three-run home run in the first, then Brigette Del Ponte followed up with her 12th - a two-run shot - to give UA an early 5-0 lead before Sun Devil ace Hillary Bach (15-2) recorded an out.
Arizona State (31-5, 0-1 Pac-10) cut the lead to one in the bottom half off three consecutive walks, a single, a sacrifice fly and an error on a play at the plate.
UA (29-3, 1-0 Pac-10) blew the game open in the third when Kristen Arriola hit a two-out, two-RBI double down the left field line, and Brittany Lastrapes plated her with a base knock of her own, making the score 8-4.
Stacie Chambers hit a towering home run in the sixth to bring the margin to 12-4, but ASU staved off the mercy-rule by scoring two in the bottom half on a Katelyn Boyd homer.
Kenzie Fowler (19-2) walked a career-high nine batters, but struck out six and scattered five hits.
Bach was chased after four-and-two-thirds, having given up 10 earned runs on 11 hits. Megan Elliott came in for relief duty, giving up one run on two hits.
The two teams will meet again at 7 p.m. Friday. The game can be heard on KCUB 1290 AM.
