TUCSON, Ariz. ?C The University of Arizona menˇ?s swimming team has a 21 point lead over the Texas Longhorns. UA has 137 points while the Longhorns have 116. California is in third place with 112 points.
Starting off the first night of finals for the Wildcats was the 200 yard free relay team of Albert Subirats, Jordan Smith, Nicolas Nilo and Ryan Richardson. The team swam a time of 1:16.55 which was fast enough for a second place finish.Sophomore Jean Basson finished in third place in the 500 yard free with a time of 4:12.75. Finishing in first place was Georgiaˇ?s Sebastien Rouault (4:09.48).
Darian Townsendˇ?s time of 1:42.72 in the 200 yard IM was fast enough for the championship. "The IM is something I started swimming when I got to Arizona. I went away from the 50 free and I started swimming IM. It has taken two years to transition into the event. But, now it has obviously paid off,ˇ± said Townsend. Finishing in eighth place was another UA swimmer, Jack Brown. Brownˇ?s time was 1:46.01.
Senior Albert Subirats finished in third place in the 50 yard free. Subirats swam a time of 19.26. Auburnˇ?s Cesar Cielo finished in first place with a time of 18.52, beating his previous NCAA record of 18.69.
The final event of the night was the 400 yard medley relay. Arizonaˇ?s team of Subirats, Ivan Barnes, Townsend and Joel Greenshields swam a time of 3:04.43 which was fast enough for the championship.
"I'm really impressed by the way the men swam tonight. They put us in a great position for the first day of the championships. Now it's time to take this meet one session as the time. We are looking forward to another great morning,ˇ± said Arizona Head Coach Frank Busch.
The second day of preliminaries will begin tomorrow at Noon. The events include: the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, and the 100-yard backstroke.
