Chou to Compete for Championship

TUCSON - The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team sent Frank Chen, Robin Chou, Mike Pigou and Carlos Bermudez to compete in the 2011 Balloon Fiesta Invitational. The event is held at the Linda Estes Tennis Center in Albuquerque, N.M. and is hosted by the New Mexico Lobos.

"Over all it was a good day today," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "We'll look to finish the tournament strong tomorrow."

In Flight A singles action, Bermudez defeated Landon Kinsley from the US Air Force Academy. In the semifinals Bermudez fell to Ben Dunbar from New Mexico. The Tucson local will compete in the Flight A 3rd place playoff on Sunday. Pigou did not compete today.

In Flight B singles play, Chen beat Dave Reddy from New Mexico Military Institute. In the semifinals the Taiwan native fell to Alex Grubbs from the US Air Force Academy. Chou won in the quarterfinals and semifinals to advance to the Flight B finals. Tomorrow, Chou will take on Alex Grubbs for the event championship.

In doubles action, Chen and Bermudez teamed up to defeat Jose Cabo and Yang Yang from New Mexico Military Institute. The duo then went on to beat Ian and Honila and Zach Romero also from the New Mexico Military Institute. Chen and Bermudez will compete for the doubles consolation title at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
