PROVO, Utah ?- The No. 14 University of Arizona women’s gymnastics team split a triangular meet on Friday night, falling to host Brigham Young, while defeating Southern Utah in the Marriott Center. Junior Karin Wurm led the Wildcats, setting a new personal best all-around score as she captured the all-around title.

Arizona totaled a 195.300 as a team, placing second behind the Cougars, who posted a season-high 195.675. The Thunderbirds, who led through the first three rotations, struggled on beam in the final rotation and placed third with a team total of 194.

"We just weren't very good tonight," head coach Bill Ryden said following the meet. "We have no excuses. BYU and Southern Utah were good tonight, but we definitely left the door open for them right from the start."

The Wildcats began the meet on beam, and tallied a 48.525. Junior Danielle Hicks led all gymnasts, winning the event by matching her season and career high score of 9.900. Freshman Miranda Russell and Wurm shared third place honors, as each earned 9.800s.

After the first rotation, UA trailed Southern Utah (49.100 on floor) and BYU (48.675 on vault).

Arizona moved to floor for the second rotation and recorded a 48.825 team score. Karin Wurm led the Wildcats and placed fourth in the meet with a 9.875. Jamie Holton notched a 9.850, while Brittney Morgan and Hicks tallied 9.825s.

Southern Utah maintained its lead after scoring a 48.700 on vault, while the Cougars held onto second place with a 49.000 on bars.

The Wildcats began to claw back into contention in the third rotation, turning in a 49.00 score on vault. Classmates Rachelle Silberg and Wurm received second-place marks of 9.825 to lead UA, while Brittney Morgan chipped in a 9.800. Sarah Specht, Russell and Hicks each earned 9.775s to round out the scoring for the Wildcats.

With its third rotation effort, UA jumped past BYU into second place by a 0.125 margin, as the Cougars totaled a 48.550 on beam. The Thunderbirds extended their lead to 0.725 points, as they recorded a 49.150 on bars.

Arizona looked to try and overtake the Thunderbirds in the final rotation, and they did, but it was the Cougars who stole the show in front of their home crowd. BYU shattered its previous season high on floor (48.975) by tallying a 49.450, led by Dayna Smart’s meet-best 9.975 to surge past the Wildcats and Southern Utah.

The Wildcats, however, had to fight hard to capture second place. Wurm matched her season and career high with a 9.925 on bars, to lead UA to a 48.950 in the event. Specht turned in a 9.825, while Russell earned a 9.800. Morgan added a 9.775, while Suzanne Alvey received a 9.625.

The Thuderbirds struggled on beam, counting two falls to score a 47.925, and surrendered their lead over the Wildcats, who finished in second place.

In the all-around, Wurm established a new personal best total with a 39.425 to lead all gymnasts.

"Karin and Danielle were absolutely phenomenal tonight," Ryden said of the two juniors. "I can't say enough about them. Who knows what we would have done without them doing what they did on each event."

"This is a great lesson for us," Ryden added. "It is definitely a realization that we have to think our way through every routine. We can't take any routine or skill for granted."

Arizona (12-4) will travel to Tempe, Ariz., to compete at the 2007 Pac-10 Championships on Saturday, March 31. The meet is set to begin at 6 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena.
