Volleyball Downs Eastern Illinois in Four Games

            EVANSTON, Ill. ?- The No. 24-ranked Arizona volleyball team (9-2) capped off a successful day against anyone named the Panthers at the Wildcat Classic on the campus of Northwestern on Friday. UA defeated the Eastern Illinois Panthers in four games, shortly after sweeping the Pitt Panthers 3-0 earlier in the day. Game scores against Eastern Illinois were 30-26, 21-30, 30-20, 30-19.


            Despite hitting just .139 as a team, UA took advantage at the net, out-playing EIU to the tune of 14 team blocks to the Panthers’ four. UA junior Dominique Lamb led the way with seven total blocks, including two solo stuffs, and freshman teammate Jacy Norton chipped in with six. The team effort at the net limited EIU to a .096 team hitting percentage for the match


            Arizona utilized a late 5-to-2 run in the opening game to take a 1-0 lead, but couldn’t maintain the momentum in the second frame, as EIU raced out to an 18-11 lead and weathered an Arizona rally to even the match 1-1


            After the break, the Wildcats pulled away from a 10-10 tie with a nine-point run before cruising through the rest of the third game for a 10-point win. The Wildcats put the match away in the fourth game with 12 kills on 30 attempts, while holding the Panthers to a match-low .026 attack percentage.


            Individually, sophomore Brooke Buringrud posted her second double-digit kill match of the day and her ninth straight contest in double figures with a team-best 18. Freshman teammate Whitney Dosty finished with 10 kills in the win for the Cats, and Lamb added to her block total with nine kills and a match-high .412 hitting percentage.


            Senior setter Stephanie Butkus, who hails from nearby Bridgeview, Ill., finished with 41 assists and 12 digs, while Katie Jackels and Brittany Leonard added 15 and 12 digs, respectively, in the win.


            Arizona will return to action on Saturday in its final non-conference match of the regular season when it meets up with host school Northwestern at 5 p.m. Tucson time.
