Box Score

Ames, Iowa (Sept. 6) - In the first game of the Iowa State Cyclone Classic on Friday, the University of Arizona women's soccer team played Wisconsin to a 1-1 overtime tie. The Wildcats remain unbeaten on the season at 2-0-1, while the Badgers even their record to 1-1-1.

Wisconsin found the back of the net early in the match, with Lauren Schmidt scoring in the eighth minute. It didn't take the Cats long to respond, however. In the 18th minute, freshman defender Jennifer Klein (Prescott, Ariz. HS) sent a corner kick into the box, which fellow freshman Erin Clewett (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) passed on to yet another freshman Mallory Miller (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic HS) for Arizona's sole tally of the match. The goal was Miller's first of her young collegiate career.

After a somewhat lackluster first half, the Wildcats stepped up and out-played Wisconsin in the second half and in both overtime periods. The Cats did have opportunities to win the contest late in overtime but were unable to convert. Jennifer Klein and Erin Clewett both had solid shot attempts in the final few minutes of the match, and senior midfielder Naomi Chu (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS) had a shot stopped in the final 45 seconds. Arizona out-shot Wisconsin, 5-2, during the two overtime periods.

The Badgers had 15-9 edge in shots for the match, with a 10-5 advantage in shots on-goal. Wildcat freshman goalkeeper Amanda Martin (Franklin, Tenn. HS) made nine saves in the contest, tying her season high. Chu led all UA players with her three shots, including two on-goal, while Miller and sophomore forward Candice Wilks (Altadena, Calif./LaSalle HS) had two shots each.

"Amanda Martin had an exceptional game, our defense was great, we had a balanced attack. It was a great game," said head coach Cathy Klein, who is in her third year of reviving the Arizona program. "This was not a case where we 'survived' the overtime - it was Wisconsin that had to survive. This is our first taste of just letting one get away, and that's new for us. We played better than last weekend, and that's what we've been focusing on - not the winning or losing. We have to get better every game.

"With her part in assisting today's goal, Erin Clewett has now figured into every goal we've scored so far this season, and I am just so excited that a freshman is leading us offensively. This means great things for the future of this program."

The Iowa State Cyclone Classic continues on Sunday, Sept. 8, when the Wildcats will take on Northern Iowa at 11 a.m. CDT. The Cats remain on the road next weekend, playing at Oklahoma on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m. CDT.
