Arizona Men?s Tennis Defeats Memphis, 6-1

Tucson, Ariz. ?- The No. 42 Arizona men’s tennis team (7-4) defeated Memphis(5-8), today, at the Robson Tennis Center. After clinching the doubles point, the Wildcats took five of the six singles matches to defeat the Tigers, 6-1.

 

The Wildcats took the early lead today against the Tigers, as they took two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point for the day. Falling behind early, junior Daniel Andrus and freshman Bruno Alcala fell to Alex Bucewicz and Marten Tamla, 8-4. Soon after that, in the No. 1 position, the No. 53 pair of senior Colin O'Grady and junior Roger Matalonga defeated Scott Felsenthal and James Spence, 8-5. Last to finish, clinching the doubles point, junior Tim Mullane and freshman Claudio Christen defeated Mark Finnegan and Alex Jago, 8-5.

 

In singles action, the Wildcat freshman led the way for the team, taking the first two matches from the Tigers today. First to finish, Christen defeated Tamla, 6-3, 6-3. After struggling in the early part of the spring season, Alcala has won his second match in a row defeating Finnegan, 7-5, 6-2. In the No. 6 position, Mullane fell to Felsenthal, 3-6, 4-6.

 

The true competition today was decided on the first three courts, as all three of these matches either went to the full three sets or required extra points. In the No. 1 position, O’Grady, clinching the win for the Wildcats, defeated No. 86 Bucceqicz, 7-6, 7-5. Following up his doubles partner, No. 48 Matalonga defeated Spence, 6-2, 5-7 (10-5). Finishing up singles competition, in the longest match of the day, junior Daniel Andrus defeated Jago, 6-4, 6-7(7-2), 7-6(7-4).

 

The Wildcats will be back in action Friday, Mar. 11, hosting No. 9 USC, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 12, the Wildcats will conclude the weekend against No. 8 UCLA, with first serve scheduled for 1 p.m.
