OKLAHOMA CITY--Toni Mascarenas' 23rd home run in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Arizona all its runs in a 3-2 victory over California in the opening game of the Women's College World Series Thursday at Don Porter Hall of Fame Stadium.

The Bears (53-17) fought back with a two-run homer by Veronica Nelson in the top of the seventh to cut into a 3-0 lead, but UA All-American Jennie Finch got two force-out ground balls and struck out Mikella Pedretti to end the game.

Erika Hanson led off the UA's only threatening inning with the first hit of the game off Cal pitcher Jocelyn Forest (27-9), a bloop slap hit which fell in beyond shortstop. After a failed bunt by Lauren Bauer, Nicole Giordano singled to put runners on first and second.

Mascarenas, who was named a first-team All-American at the WCWS banquet Wednesday night, then pulled a pitch down the line about 10 feet beyond the television camera tower just inside the foul pole for the first score.

Finch, who was 3-0 this year against California, struck out 10 to improve her record to 30-0. She has won her last 38 decisions dating to a loss April 21, 2000, at Arizona State.

"It was crucial to have her (pitching) this game," Arizona coach Mike Candrea said. "Other than one pitch, they really didn't hit the ball hard," he said. "I thought Jennie was dominating."

Forest pitched hitless ball for five full innings until Hanson's single. "It wasn't the long ball that got us going. It was some quick kids who got the bat on the ball in the short game," Arizona coach Mike Candrea said of the hits by Hanson and Giordano.

Arizona, 62-4 overall, moves into a winner's bracket game at 6 p.m. Friday against the winner of the Oklahoma-Michigan contest. California next plays in an 11 a.m. game Saturday against the OU-Michigan loser.
