TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State used a 27-9 second half scoring stretch to erase a 8-point deficit and hand visiting Arizona a 57-49 defeat, Saturday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
Arizona was the better team for the first 30 minutes of the game, dominating on the boards and holding a 38-30 lead with 10:22 to play after a free throw by Soana Lucet. However, the Wildcats would score just 11 points the rest of the way.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Alex Earl provided the finishing touches on a 10-0 run by the Sun Devils over 2:06, turning the 8-point deficit into a 40-38 advantage. Reiko Thomas broke the drought with a driving lay-up and the teams traded baskets to the 4:06 mark before the Sun Devils pulled away.
Earl drained her third trey of the half that spurred a 13-3 run that helped Arizona State claim a 10-point lead. The Wildcats made just 1-of-9 shots over the final four minutes while adding a single free throw by Lucet that drew Arizona within 49-45 with 1:51 remaining.
Lucet missed the second of her two attempts, but Ibekwe grabbed the rebound. However, Davellyn Whyte missed a short jumper, then Ashley Frazier was off on a three-point attempt after a steal by Lucet.
Becca Tobin, Danielle Orsillo and Janae Fulcher had 10 points apiece to lead Arizona State (16-9, 8-6). Orsillo had a game-high 5 assists while Tobin pulled down a team-leading 7 rebounds.
Lucet led the Wildcats with 12 points to go along with 10 rebounds while Whyte had 10 points, but was just 2-of-18 from the field. Ibekwe led all players with 17 rebounds.
Arizona (13-12, 6-8) is back home for its final homestand of the season on Thursday, February 25 starting with the University of California at 7:00 p.m.
