Women's Golf Tied for 17th Before Play Halted

OPELIKA, Ala. - A Halt in play because of lighting in the middle of the second round Wednesday found Arizona tied in 17th place with Florida State at the NCAA Championship in Opelika, Ala. Twelve teams were still on the course when play was stopped.

The Wildcats shot a 26-over-par 602 to trail second-round leader, UCLA by 30 strokes after the Bruins shot 4-under-par 572. Duke trails UCLA by one shot after carding 3-under-par 573 to stand in second. After leading all in the first round, Oklahoma State fell to third after carding an 5 over-par through hole 16. Vanderbilt (582) is in fourth and Ohio State holds the fifth position through hole 13, at 10-over-par.

Individually, sophomores Alejandra Martin in her second tournament of the season, is tied for 55th place at 5-over-par 149 before play stopped. The sophomore from Guadalajara, Mexico bogeyed on six holes and grabbed three birdies in her second round action, which saw her at 3-over-par 75 for the round.

 
 

Sophomore Lani Elston began her round at the 10th tee where she bogeyed the hole. The native of Spokane, Wash. birdied two holes on the front nine to tie her for 69th at 7-over-par 151.

Joining Elston tied at 69th is sophomore Erica Blasberg. After a disappointing start to the NCAA Championship the native of Corona, Calif. fired off two birdies in her first nine holes to help her bounces back with a second round score of 1-over-par 73.

Cassandra Kirkland shot a second round 4-over-par 76 to put her 8-over-par 152 for the tournament. Junior Mar Garcia carded a 12-over-par 156.

Depending on the conclusion of the second round action the Wildcats are scheduled to tee off at 9:00 a.m. CST. The weather for Thursday shows a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. The 2004 NCAA Championship tournament is being held at Grand National Lake Course, par 72 over 6,215 yards.
