NIGHT FOUR RESULTS Get Acrobat Reader

Junior Carl Mickelson (Chandler, Ariz.) earned his second Pac-12 Championship on Saturday on the fourth and final night of the Men’s Swimming Pac-12 Championships in Los Angeles.

Mickelson swam the 200 breast in a time of 1:53.12, an NCAA “A” cut time, to beat out 32 other competitors for his second championship in two days. On Friday, he won the 100 breast for his first title.

Senior Cory Chitwood (Union, Ky.) earned runner-up honors in the 200 back behind Stanford’s David Nolan. Chitwood still has the fastest time in the country in the event.

“Carl was one of the highlights of the meet,” Arizona head coach Eric Hansen said. “Cory and Adam Small also stepped up for us throughout the week.”

Four additional Arizona athletes posted finishes in the top 10, as freshman Kevin Cordes (Naperville, Ill.) finished fifth in the 200 breast, senior Adam Small (Tempe, Ariz.) finished eighth in the 100 free, senior Kevin Munsch (Kent, Wash.) finished ninth in the 200 breast and sophomore Michael Sheppard (Eads, Tenn.) finished ninth in the 200 back.

As a team, the Wildcats placed in third behind Stanford and California.

“I think our performance was pretty predictable with what we were willing to invest in this meet,” Hansen said. “We battled hard and I think it was really important for our preparation for NCAAs. I really believe we are on track to do what we have worked for all season.”

Arizona will have a few weeks off before heading to Federal Way, Wash. for the biggest meet of the season, the NCAA Championships. They will take place beginning Thursday, March 22 and will continue through Saturday, March 24.
