Tucson, Ariz. (Oct. 30) - With a game-high 26 points from senior forward Elizabeth Pickney, the Red Team won the annual Arizona women's basketball Red & Blue Game, 78-64, in front of a crowd of 360 in the McKale Center on Tuesday night.
The Red Team, which was made up primarily of current Wildcats, jumped on the Blue Team quickly, gaining a 15-point (28-13) lead at 8:37 in the first half. They pushed their spread to 19 points at 5:15, but the Blue Team, which was a combination of current Wildcats and male practice players, used a 13-4 run to cut the Red lead to 10 (40-30) at halftime.
Red stretched its lead again early in the second, going on a 19-6 run to gain a 23-point (59-36) advantage just seven minutes into the period. The Blue Team fought back through the waning minutes but never got closer than 12 points for the remainder of the game.
"Our team did really well taking care of the ball in the first half," said head coach Joan Bonvicini, who is beginning her 11th season at the helm of the Wildcat program. "In the second half, we didn't take care of the ball like we should have, and we became sloppy with our passes. We need to do a better job with the ball, and we will definitely work on taking care of the ball in the upcoming weeks."
In addition to Pickney's 26 points, the Red Team got 14 points from senior center LaKeisha Taylor, along with a game-high-tying seven rebounds. Freshman forward Robin Roberson contributed eight points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Aimee Grzyb added six points, six rebounds and six assists.
"Liz Pickney showed some versatility tonight with her inside play and her shooting from beyond the arc. She runs up and down the floor really well," said Bonvicini. "I was impressed with LaKeisha's athleticism. She performed well on both ends of the floor tonight, and I will expect her to continue strong play like that during the season."
Former Wildcat Tatum Brown, who was participating as a practice player, led the Blue Team with 15 points on a 6-for-9 performance from the floor. Male practice players Michael Perkins and David Vallecorsa added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Playing alternately for both the Red and Blue teams, sophomore guard Candice Allen racked up a combined 13 points. Freshman Danielle Adefeso, who also played on both sides, pulled down six rebounds on the night.
The Wildcats play their first outside competition of the season on Monday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. with an exhibition against the Team Concept AAU club out of Portland, Ore.
