TUCSON ?C The Arizona menˇ?s tennis team beat the Oregon Ducks today for its first Pac-10 victory of the season 6-1.
With the win the team improves to 11-8, 1-5 while Oregon falls to 11-11, 0-5.
Doubles started off shaky for the Cats as they lost court three 8-6 and court two found themselves in an early hole. But court one took care of business, winning 8-2 and Claudio Christen and Andres Carrasco beat the Oregon duo of Stephen Wiechert and Francisco Gallardo 9-8 (5) to get the doubles point.
Up 1-0, Arizona went to work in the singles. Christen topped Marcos Verdasco in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Then Peter Zimmer won when his opponent defaulted after one set giving Zimmer the 6-3, ret. victory.
With the score 3-0, Ravid Hazi sealed the win for the Cats with his victory on court five over Romeo Mortera, 6-2, 7-6 (8).
ˇ?It feels good to get the win,ˇ± said head coach Tad Berkowitz. ˇ?I thought the boys competed hard and were in control the entire match.ˇ±
Next weekend Arizona will host USC and UCLA at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
