Sept. 25, 2012

The trophy arrived in Sean Miller's hands Tuesday for winning the 2012 "Shots from the Heart" free throw shooting contest.

Miller made 24 of 25 free throws, scoring a total of 55 points to defeat Ray McCallum of Detroit, who made 21 of 25 attempts and scored 43 points, in the head coaches' tournament final in May.

Through the six rounds of the event, Miller connected on 145-of-150 free throws (.967) and scored 327 of a possible 336 points.

Miller claims the 2012 Shots From the Heart championship a year after finishing as the runner-up in the inaugural event. He is the only coach in the event's two-year history to advance to the Final Four in each season. Cumulatively, Miller has made 94.7 percent (284-of-300) of his shots in the event over the last two years.

"I'm very honored and also proud to have won the Shots From the Heart contest in 2012," said Miller. "Like I've said before, anything that benefits Skip Prosser and his legacy is something we want to be a part of."

"Shots from the Heart" is a season-long free throw contest that features 64 participating head coaches bracketed in a tournament-style format. Beginning in November and continuing through February, coaches will shoot 25 free throws on their campuses while a departmental staff member will tally and report the results. The coach with the most points scored in each match-up would advance to the next round.

In an effort to avoid ties, the following scoring system will be used: shots 1-10 are worth 1 point each, shots 11-15 are worth 2 points each, shots 16-20 are worth three points, shots 21-24 are worth four points and shot 25 is worth five points.

The event is administered by collegeinsider.com in conjunction with the American Heart Association and the Skip Prosser Foundation. For additional tournament information, go to www.collegeinsider.com/shots.
