University of Arizona women's soccer player Kelly Nelson (Lakewood, Calif./Mayfair HS) has been named the Pac-10 Conference Player of the Week for Oct. 29-Nov. 3, announced the league office on Tuesday.
Nelson, a redshirt freshman forward, scored two goals as Arizona split with the Washington schools in Tucson. Nelson notched the game-winner five minutes into the second overtime period against No. 20 Washington on Nov. 1, lifting the Cats to a 2-1 win. It marked Arizona's first-ever win against the Huskies in eight meetings. It was Nelson's third game-winner and tied the UA school record for most game-winning goals in a season. The victory also snapped a six-game losing skid for the Wildcats, while Nelson's goal broke Arizona individual record for goals in a season. In the 4-2 loss to Washington State on Nov. 3, Nelson scored her Pac-10-leading 13th goal of the season in the 61st minute. Nelson also tied the school single-season record with 27 points on the year.
This is Nelson's first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and Arizona's third such honor all-time.
The Wildcats wrap up the 2002 season in the Bay Area this weekend. Arizona plays at California on Friday, Nov. 8, at 11:30 a.m. PST, then the Cats take on top-ranked Stanford on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. PST in Palo Alto.
