TUCSON - Arizona earned a potential tie for its eighth Pac-10 Conference championship with a 2-0 victory over Oregon State (40-21, 4-13) on Saturday night, before a crowd of 1,758 at Hillenbrand Stadium.

The Cats improved to 13-2 in league play. Coupled with losses by Stanford (11-6) to UCLA and by Washington (9-7) to California earlier in the day, the Cats have a four-game lead with four games to play. UA (50-3) could clinch the outright title with another victory over Oregon State on Sunday.

But if Stanford were to beat UCLA Sunday and win its games in Oregon next week, and Arizona dropped its remaining four games, the Cardinal would win the title by winning percentage, though both teams would be the same in the loss column. UA's game against Washington that was rained out April 2 leaves the Cats a game short of the round-robin 21 contests in league play.

So, Arizona goes back to work Sunday with the same resolve that's taken it to another 50-victory season.

UA's Alicia Hollowell held the Beavers to three hits and struck out 11 in improving her recorfd to 37-2. The Cats knocked out eight hits but also stranded 10 runners, including at least one in every inning. Hollowell's shutout was her 22nd of the year.

Samantha Quintero slapped an infield hit, moved up on Jackie Coburn's ground ball, and scored on a single by Crystal Farley to give UA the first lead, 1-0, in the bottom of the second.

Autumn Champion led off the UA third with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Wendy Allen, moved to third on a ground ball by Mackenzie Vandergeest and scored on a sinking line drive by Kristie Fox that bounced out of the glove of diving leftfielder Carrie Syphers for an RBI base hit to make it 2-0.

Arizona and Oregon State meet in the Cats' final regular-season home game at 1 p.m. Sunday. Annual Senior Day ceremonies will be held immediately following the game, for departing seniors Erin Palomarez, Allen, Vandergeest and Quintero.

The Cats close the season with a trip to UCLA Friday and a doubleheader at Washington Saturday. The NCAA will announce the 64-team field for the NCAA Softball Championships to be held at eight sites May 20-23, including Hillenbrand Stadium. Tickets are on sale at the McKale Center ticket office or online at the UA web site, www.arizonaathletics.com.
