TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 40 University of Arizona men's tennis team defeated the No. 49 San Diego Toreros, 6-1, in UA's first home match of the spring season Friday. The Wildcats, who began a 10-match homestand against the Toreros, improved to 1-0 this spring in dual matches. Arizona won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches.
Individually for the Wildcats, sophomore Carl Hagman clinched the match for Arizona, topping San Diego's Martin Linusson, 6-4, 6-2. Senior Steven Capriati defeated senior Ricardo Rizo, 6-2, 6-2, while sophomore Whi Kim outlasted senior Juan Cerda, 7-5, 6-3. Junior Tom Lloyd downed San Diego's Rob Blair, 6-2, 6-4. After losing the first set, sophomore Arnaud Agniel pulled out a win over senior Stephen Taylor, 5-7, 7-6, 7-6.
Arizona's duo of Roeland Brateanu and Colin O'Grady defeated San Diego's Rob Blair and Ted Burghardt, 8-5, in doubles play. Capriati and Hagman earned a 9-8 win over Juan Cerda and Jason Pongsrikul to clinch the doubles point for the Wildcats.
The Wildcat men's tennis squad returns to action Monday, Feb. 4 against the Utah Utes, at 1:30 p.m., in the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
