Wildcat Men's Tennis Finishes Day One of the ITA/So. Calif. Fall Regional Championships

Malibu, Calif. - The Arizona men's tennis team finished the first day of competition at the ITA/Southern California Fall Regional Championships in Malibu, Calif.

In the Main Draw, the first round of 64, the Wildcats finished play with a 6-2 record. Senior Brian Jackson fell to the No. 1 seed, Al Garland of Pepperdine, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Steven Capriati, earning a No. 8 seed, topped Greg Levy of Cal Poly in a three-set match, 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Whi Kim cruised past UC Riverside's Derek Betyar in a two-set victory, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Tom Lloyd lost to Diego Acuna of Pepperdine in a tough match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. Senior Bruno Arapovic out lasted UCLA's Lassi Ketola, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Freshman Colin O'Grady beat Nick Carless of Cal Poly, 7-5, 6-1. Sophomore Carl Hagman defeated ASU's Shaul Aloni, 6-1, 6-0 and sophomore Roeland Bratianu beat Loyola Marymount's Anthony Evrard, 6-4, 7-6.

Capriati and Hagman will advance to the next round as Capriati topped Juan Cerda of San Diego, 6-3, 7-6(3) and Hagman finished off Mike Placek of UC Santa Barbara, 6-4, 6-4. In other second round action, Arapovic lost to Leopold Graeubig of Loyola Marymount, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Kim fell to Mirza Duranovic of ASU, 7-5, 6-4. Bratianu was defeated by Steve Racioppi of Pepperdine in a two-set match, 6-1, 6-2, then O'Grady lost to Damien Spizzo, the No. 7 seed from USC in a touch match, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4.

In the consolation draw the Wildcats' singles players split their matches, Jackson fell to Erin Carroll of Cal Poly, 6-2, 6-1 and Lloyd outlasted Olivier Charroin of ASU, 6-1, 6-2.

On the doubles side of competition Arizona finished 3-1. The No. 3 seeded team of Capriati and Hagman knocked off Leopold Graebig and Carlos Martrosyan of Loyola Marymount, 8-5. The team of Bratianu and O'Grady topped San Diego's Ricardo Rizzo and Stephen Taylor, 8-4. Kim and Lloyd shutout UC Riverside's Derek Betyar and Brent Davis, 8-0. Arapovic and Jackson fell to UC Irvine's Gerg Bjorkman and Carl Lumsden, 8-5.

Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on the Pepperdine campus is the site for this weekend's Championships. The four-day tournament begins Oct. 25 and continues through the championship matches on Oct. 28.

The tournament includes a 64-player singles and 32-team doubles draw and features players from 11 schools--Arizona, Arizona State, Cal Poly, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, San Diego, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara and USC.

The Arizona men's tennis team next travels to Honolulu, Hawaii, Nov. 20, to take on the University of Hawaii.
