TUCSON - No. 2-ranked Arizona batted around in the fifth to score six runs and change a close game into a rout as the Wildcats beat No. 16 Oregon State, 7-0, in college softball action Saturday night.
UA's Jennie Finch (25-2) struck out 12, scattered three hits and blasted a grand slam in boosting the Cats to 43-7 overall and 10-3 in Pac-10 play. The Beavers dropped to 35-17 and 6-8.
UA took a 1-0 lead in the first. Lovie Jung doubled to lead off and
Courtney Fossatti hit an infield single to put runners at the corners. Jung
scored on a fielder's choice by Leneah Manuma, sliding across the plate as
the throw from first baseman Jenni Jodoin was wide.
One-out singles by Crystal Farley and Jung, and an error by shortstop Kelly Peterseon loaded the bases, then Jennie Finch unloaded her 14th home run and the team's 13th grand slam of the season to make it 5-0. Pitcher Kristen Hunter (11-6) had struck Finch out in her two previous at bats.
Leneah Manuma singled and after two outs, Jackie Coburn doubled pinch-runner Rebekah Quiroz home and Jenny Gladding singled in Coburn to make it 7-0.
Oregon State had singles by Michelle Chariton in the first, Clare Burnmun in the fourth and Traci Feldt in the fifth.
The two teams conlude their weekend series at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hillenbrand Stadium
