TUSCON--The No. 55 Arizona women's tennis team dropped their final match of the regular season 5-2 to conference rival No. 27 Arizona State, Saturday, at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

The Cats lost the doubles point in the fourth consecutive match before heading into singles play.

Arizona's wins came on courts three and five, from seniors Claire Rietsch and Natalia Toporowska.

Rietsch started off strong, taking the first set 6-3 over Arizona State's Nadia Abdala. In the second set, Abdala jumped out to a 3-0 lead, before the Laguna Beach, Calif. native answered back two straight. The pair split the next two points, with Rietsch down 3-4, and then the Wildcat senior won the next three points to take the set and the win at 6-4.

On court five, Toporowska also started off with an early 2-1 lead over Hannah James before taking the first set 6-3. The Toronto, Ontario native went down 3-4 in the second set, but was able to overcome the deficit, and won it all at 7-5.

Sophomore Natasha Marks, ranked at No. 107, took a loss to No. 76 Micaela Hein in an extremely close match on court one. Marks dropped the first set to Hein 6-3, and traded points with the Sun Devil for most of the second. The Nottingham, England native took a 4-3 lead, and then the next two points went in her favor. Since the match was already decided, the pair went into a 10-point tiebreak set, with Hein topping Marks at 10-4.

"We played a good match against ASU." Said head coach Vicky Maes, "They are a strong team 1 through 6 and we played them close. In doubles they certainly outmatched us, but we created chances in singles, and that made it very close. In the end, I was really happy to see our seniors pull out two great wins in their final home matches."

Up next, the Wildcats head into postseason play at the 2010 Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif. Play begins on Thursday, April 22 and lasts through the 25th.
