TUCSON--Kate Judd's double to deep center in the bottom of the tenth inning scored Stacie Hirano from second base to give Hawaii a 3-2 victory over Southern Mississippi in a two-hour and 40-minute contest in Arizona's Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament Saturday.
Hirano was placed on second by the international tie-breaker rule, and scored without a close play at the plate. Hawaii's defense gave it a chance. Southern Mississipi's tie-breaker runner was cut down at the plate on a throw by Hawaii first baseman Stacey Porter in the eighth, and then in the ninth, pinch-runner Chrissy King was cut down at the plate by Rainbow Wahine centerfielder Marie Jackson.
April Crowell drew a walk and Sheri Oronoz doubled down the left-field line to give Hawaii runners in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth, but Southern Miss reliever Jessica Holaway struck out two and got a foul pop-out to end the threat.
Southern Miss jumped to a first-inning lead with a single by Amanda Brown and a two-run home run by Tammy Edwards. Hawaii answered in kind in the bottom of the frame when Kate Judd followed a Stacie Hirano walk with a blast over the left-field fence.
