Minneapolis, Minn.- The No. 1 seed Arizona Wildcats managed to beat Penn State, 4-3, Friday night in softball regionals.
Junior Lovie Jung, sophomore Courtney Fossatti and senior Jennie Finch all scored runs for Arizona in the third inning. Jung reached base when she singled to center field. Jung scored from first base when Fossatti singled to left field and Penn State's left fielder Megan Humphrey committed an error. Finch walked and stole second base. Sophomore Leneah Manuma singled to left field and both Fossatti and Finch scored.
Penn State scored two runs in the fourth inning to make the score 3-2. Both Erica Greenberg and Susan Shuplock scored runs. Greenberg singled to center field to reach first and advanced when Shuplock was hit by pitch. Mandy Nuxoll reached base when freshman Jackie Coburn committed an error and Greenberg and Shuplock scored.
The Cats went up 4-2 in the fifth inning when Fossatti scored her second run of the game off of an RBI single to center field by Finch.
The score went up 4-3 when Penn State scored a run in the seventh inning. Erin Norton reached off of a fielder's choice and reached second when Jackie Dabrowski singled to right field. Kelly Galigher singled to the short stop and Norton scored. Gladding ended the game with 11 strikeouts and improved her record to 21-6. The Cats improve to 50-10 on the season. No. 1 seed Arizona plays No. 3 seed DePaul at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, May 18.
