TUCSON - University of Arizona sophomore safety Jared Tevis has been named an honorable mention Jim Thorpe Defensive Back of the Week, it was announced by the association on Wednesday.
A former walk-on, Tevis led a gritty Wildcat defense with his first two career interceptions, a pass breakup and nine tackles in Arizona's upset win over then-No. 18 Oklahoma State on Saturday night. The pair of picks were two of the four turnovers forced by the UA defense, which provided the Wildcats a with a plus-four turnover margin in the game, their largest single game margin since the 2008 opener against Idaho.
After surrendering touchdowns on Oklahoma State's first two drives, UA's defense stiffened up and stopped the Cowboys on the next six possessions. That allowed UA's offense to claim a 23-14 lead late in the second quarter but Oklahoma State was poised to score before half. However, Tevis intercepted a pass at the nine-yard to thwart the scoring attempt and preserve a nine-point halftime lead.
Tevis' second interception helped seal the game in the fourth quarter. With the Wildcats leading by 14, Tevis picked off a Wes Lunt pass at the UA 35-yard line and returned it 32 yards to set up another score to put the game out of reach with a three-touchdown advantage.
Tevis, who plays the "bandit" safety position in the UA 3-3-5 defense, ranks second in the Pac-12 with 21 tackles through two games and No. 3 in the NCAA with two interceptions. On the season, he has tallied 21 tackles and has broken up three passes.
The Wildcats will host South Carolina State on Sat., Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Arizona Stadium. The game will air on the Pac-12 Networks. Tickets are available at the McKale Center Ticket office, by visiting ArizonaWildcats.com or by calling 520-621-2287 or 1-800-452-CATS.
