TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men’s golf team competed in the third and final round of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. at Karsten Country Club today. The Wildcats shot a final round score of 291 (+7) to give them an 865 (+13) for the tournament. Arizona finished in ninth place overall.

UNLV went into the final round in a tie for fourth place, but fired a 277 (-7) in the third round to win the tournament with a score of 843 (-9) The Rebels were led by Kevin Penner and Kurt Kitayama, who both posted final scores of 207 (-6) and finished in a tie for fifth place. California was not too far behind UNLV as they shot a third round score of 278 (-6) to give them a total score of 844 (-8), just one shot behind the victors UNLV.

Once again, Oregon State’s Nick Chianello maintained his lead throughout the tournament by posting a final score of 202 (-11) to win the Thunderbird Invitational. Chianello carded a 70 (-1) on the third day of the tournament, and finished one stroke ahead of Iowa State’s Scott Fernandez and California’s Brandon Hagy.

Individually for the Wildcats, senior Juan Pablo Hernandez, competing as an individual, finished the highest of any other Wildcat for the tournament. Hernandez finished in a tie for ninth place with a total score of 211 (-2). He shot a third round score of 69 (-1).

Erik Oja earned his fifth top 20 finish by carding a third round score of 70 (-1) to give him a total score of 213 (E) for the tournament. He finished in a tie for 18th place. Dylan Healey and Alex McMahon both finished in a tie for 33rd with total scores of 217 (+4). Healey posted a 71 (+1) in the third round, while McMahon finished the third round with a score of 74 (+3). Trent Redfern carded a 76 (+5) in the third round to give him a score of 221 (+8), and Nick Olsgaard rounded out the team with a score of 225 (+12).
