Head coach Niya Butts and the Arizona women’s basketball team (5-3) will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. to take on New Mexico (7-2) on Saturday for its fifth-straight game away from McKale Center. The game is scheduled to tip off at 2 p.m. MT.
The Lobos, led by second-year head coach Yvonne Sanchez, have started the season 7-2, led by guard Caroline Durbin’s 12.4 ppg in New Mexico’s first nine games.
Forward Deeva Vaughn has also emerged as one of UNM’s top scorers, averaging 10.2 ppg, while forward Jourdan Erskine leads the team in rebounds at 6.6 rpg.
As a team, the Lobos are shooting an average of 42.2 percent from the field and 34.3 percent from the three-point line. They are outrebounding their opponents 42.4 to 35.2.
Arizona is coming off its first road loss of the season after it fell to Long Beach State in Long Beach, Calif., 71-61 on Sunday. Senior Davellyn Whyte (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored 17 points, dished out seven assists and added eight steals to lead the Wildcats. Junior Erica Barnes (Sacramento, Calif.) also scored in double-digits, contributing 11 points and six rebounds.
UA holds a 12-9 advantage over UNM in the 17 times the schools have met in a series history dating back to 1974. Arizona has won the last two games in the series, including a 59-50 win in Tucson in 2011. Whyte posted her first-career double-double in the matchup, tallying 27 points and 12 rebounds.
The game can be heard live on KTUC AM 1400. The broadcasts will start 15 minutes prior to tip-off for the pregame show, with Derrick Palmer (play-by-play) and Lisa Salgado (color) calling the action.
