TUCSON -

Top-ranked Arizona never quite was totally in sync but still put up some numbers in a 8-0 victory over No. 4 California in Pac-10 softball action Friday night before a crowd of 1,833 at Hillenbrand Stadium.

The victory gave UA (47-2) a sweep of the season's three-game series against the Bears (38-11) and kept the Cats on top of the Pac-10 with an 11-1 record. Cal dropped to 5-8 in league play.

The Cats ended the game in five innings with a run scored on a wild pitch by Cal reliever Sarah Adams. Candace Abrams and Samantha Quintero walked to lead off the inning, Caitlin Lowe drove in Abrams and both she and Quintero moved up on a throw to the plate. Quintero scored on the wild pitch during pinch-hitter Erin Palomarez' at bat.

UA collected nine hits and held Cal to four with a shutout performance by pitcher Alicia Hollowell.

UA took a 1-0 lead in the second, but missed a few opportunities to have a bigger inning. Kristie Fox reached on an error, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Jackie Coburn and scored on Allyson Von Liechtenstein's hit up the middle. Quintero singled to right field and both runners moved up when rightfielder Chelse Sutton threw the ball past first base.

The Cats tried to advance on a fielder's choice by Crystal Farley, but Von Liechtenstein was cut down at the plate by second baseman Jessica Pamanian's throw. Lowe walked to load the bases, but Autumn Champion grounded back to pitcher Kelly Anderson for the third out.

Mackenzie Vandergeest slugged her 14th home run of the year with one out and none on in the third to push UA's lead to 2-0.

The Bears threatened in the top of the fourth with a walk by Kaleo Eldredge and an infield single by Chelsea Spencer that moved Eldredge to third. Spencer stole second to put two runners in scoring position, but Hollowell got Roni Rodrigues to ground to second to end the threat.

A walk by Farley and successive singles by Lowe and Champion loaded the bases in the fourth for Wendy Allen, UA's RBI leader. Allen hit a fielder's choice by shortstop Rodrigues' throw to the plate hit Farley and bounced away for an error, allowing both Farley and Lowe to score and make it 4-0. After a Mackenzie Vandergeest fielder's choice, Fox singled in two runs to make it 6-0. All four runs in the inning were unearned.

Hollowell improved to 34-1 and struck out six to stretch her school record to 415. Cal's Kelly Anderson (20-8) took the loss.

UA will play host to No. 9 Stanford at 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. The Golden Bears travel to Tempe for games at Arizona State over the weekend.
