TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona volleyball team returns home to host the Arizona Desert Classic inside McKale Center on Friday and Saturday. The Wildcats will welcome in UC Irvine, Boise State and American for the two-day event, which will be the final regular season tournament of the season.
Arizona will open the tournament against UC Irvine on Friday at 10:30 a.m. before taking on Boise State during the night session at 7:00 p.m. The Cats will close out the tournament on Saturday against American at 10:00 a.m.
The Wildcats enter the weekend with a 5-3 overall record after winning two of three at last weekend’s Arizona Invitational. Arizona defeated Iona and Lipscomb, but fell in Friday night’s match to TCU.
Arizona is led on the offensive end by sophomore Madi Kingdon (Phoenix, Ariz.). Kingdon currently ranks third in the Pac-12 for kills at 4.43 per set, while ranking fifth in points at 4.84. Kingdon has recorded double-figure kills in seven of the eight matches thus far.
Meanwhile, junior setter Chanel Brown (Tempe, Ariz.) is fourth in the Pac-12 for assists with 10.64 per set. Brown has already recorded three double-doubles so far this season, which is tied for most on the squad with Kingdon and Taylor Arizobal (Laguna Niguel, Ariz.). Junior Candace Nicholson (Long Beach, Calif.) paces the Arizona defense with 4.00 digs per set, which ranks fifth in the Pac-12.
Friday’s matchup between Arizona and UC Irvine marks the seventh all-time meeting between the two schools. Arizona owns a 4-2 all-time record against the Anteaters, which includes three straight victories. The last meeting between the two teams occurred five years ago to the day of Friday’s matchup. UC Irvine enters the weekend with a 4-6 overall record.
In the Friday nightcap, Arizona will be facing Boise State for the first time in school history. Boise State rolls into Tucson with a 6-5 overall record.
American enters the weekend with a 5-3 overall record. Saturday’s matchup will be the fifth time in history that Arizona and American will meet. The two teams last faced each other back in 2004 with Arizona earning a 3-1 victory. The Wildcats are a perfect 4-0 all-time against the Eagles.
Following the Arizona Desert Classic, Arizona opens Pac-12 play at home against Arizona State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The match will air live on the Pac-12 Networks.
