Women's tennis has exceptional first day at tournament

Four of the five Arizona women's tennis team members went undefeated in their matches in the first day of the ITA West Regional Tournament in San Diego on Thursday.

In singles action, senior Danielle Steinberg defeated Loyola Marymount's Tina Razloznik 6-2, 6-1, and will play USC's Alison Ramos in the round of 32 today at 11:30 a.m.

In the round of 64, freshman Sarah Landsman defeated Arizona State's Laila Abdala 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 after defeating Long Beach State's Stephanie Jeanes 7-6, 6-3 in the round of 128. She will play Pepperdine's Anamika Bhargava today in the round of 32 at 11:30 a.m.

After defeating San Diego State's Olivia Colman 6-3, 6-3, sophomore Jane Huh lost to UCLA's Ashley Joelson 6-7, 6-2, 7-5 in the round of 64. Today she will play University of San Diego's Justine Perl in the second round of consolation at 9:30 a.m.

Freshman Deborah Castany's opponent Cioffi withdrew from the tournament in the round of 128. In the round of 64, Castany faced UC Santa Barbara's Bryanna Ojeda and won, 6-2, 6-2. Today, Castany will face Arizona State's Nadia Abdala at noon.

Junior Ariane Masschelein defeated Loyola Marymount's Jane Pringle 6-4, 6-2, and will go on to play San Diego State's Holly Bagshaw in the round of 32 today at noon.

In doubles, Huh and Steinberg defeated Pepperdine's Marigrace Marshall and Danielle Thomasima 8-0. They advance to the round of 32 to play San Diego State's Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison.

Landsman and Masschelein will play against Hawaii's Alyssa Nafarrete and Natasha Zorec at 8:30 a.m.

The tournament, hosted by San Diego State and University of San Diego, and includes thirteen other schools including Arizona State, UCLA, USC, Pepperdine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount University, Long Beach State, Hawaii, UNLV, Cal State Northridge, and Cal State Fullerton.

The five days of play conclude on Monday, October 27.
