PROVO, Utah ?- The University of Arizona women’s soccer team lost its second straight match to top 15 competition. No. 14 BYU defeated the Wildcats 1-0.

Arizona played the Cougars even in the first half, 0-0. The Wildcats put up four shots while BYU had three. In the second half, the Cougars put more pressure on the Arizona defense, recording 11 shots to Arizona’s two.

“I thought played we played well in the first half and took better care of the ball (than in the Portland game),” said Head Coach Dan Tobias. “We just didn’t finish any of our chances.”

BYU’s Katie Fellows’ goal broke the 0-0 tie at the 72:16 mark. Fellows found the back of the net off a corner kick by Haylee Cuthbert.

Chelsea McIntyre had seven saves in the game while the Cougars’ Erika Woodbury recorded one save. This is Arizona’s second straight game recording only one shot on goal.

Gianna DeSaverio led the Arizona offense with two shots. DeSaverio had the Wildcats’ best chance to score after they fell behind but her shot hit off the crossbar.

“In the second half, we didn’t do a good enough job defensively,” said Tobias. “We were out shot 11 to 2 in the second half and they had five corner kicks and eight in the game. It is not a coincidence that they scored off a corner kick. It came on a ball that got knocked around and bounced around and when our player tried to clear it the ball went off our player’s foot into the goal.”

Arizona, which fell to 6-4-0 on the season, will be in action again on Thursday, Sept. 28 when it travels to Cal State Fullerton for a 7 p.m. game.
