While many other sports often take summer vacation breaks, the Arizona swimming and diving team is fast at work, looking for different ways to get better.
Many UA swimmers recorded strong times while swimming in the Ford Dealers Aquatics Southwest Classic Invitational this past weekend which was held at the Wildcats' training facility. The meet was fiercely competitive with the Australian National Team sending over 30 swimmers to Tucson including Beijing gold-medal winners Leisel Jones and Stephanie Rice. Some event winners during the Invitational were 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year Whitney Myers, Julie Stupp, Matt Grevers, Albert Subirats, and senior-to-be Jack Brown.
Also the Wildcat divers including Ainsley Oliver, Ben Grado and Andres Guerra are honing their skills in preparation for the 2009-10 season. With the recent addition of the new Kasser Family Pool, the divers have arguably one of the finest facilities of any Division 1 program.
Floswimming.com recently spent a week in Tucson documenting the program while also covering the Southwest Classic Invitational. You can watch as the team goes through its daily "dryland" portion of practice here.
This weekend many current and former Wildcats, along with head coach Frank Busch, will be in Santa Clara, Calif. for the Santa Clara Invitational. Also in attendance in Santa Clara will be U.S. gold-medal winners Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. You can access results here.
After the Santa Clara event, many of Arizona's American swimmers will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. for the U.S. World Championship trials to determine the American team for the FINA World Championships later this summer in Rome.
