NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

In a match that came down to one set, the No. 30 Arizona women’s tennis team fell to No. 17 Vanderbilt, 4-3, in the first round of the ITA Kick-off Weekend in Nashville, Tenn.

“I feel so proud of my group with the effort they brought to the court today,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “Vanderbilt gave us very few opportunities and we had to play well to convert those that came to us.

The Wildcats came out strong, winning the doubles point after sophomores Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) and Susan McRann (Dublin, Ireland) won at the No. 2 spot and sophomore Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) and senior Natasha Marks (Nottingham, England) won at the No. 1 spot.

Senior Sarah Landsman (Syosset, N.Y.) started off singles play with a defeat of Vanderbilt’s  Alex Leatu and Marks earned a win over Marie Casares, but Smyth, McRann and freshman Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) fell in their respective matches.

The match came down to Stubbe and Vanderbilt’s Lauren Mira. Stubbe took the first set 7-6, but fell 3-6 in the second and had to retire set three to give the Commodores the win.

“We played ourselves into a position to win and it was one heck of a match,” Maes said. “It’s too bad it had to end with Kim going down in the final set, because our team really deserved to see this one through until the end.”

Arizona will have a quick turnaround before it faces No. 23 Alabama on Sunday at 9 a.m. CT. The Wildcats will face the challenge of playing without Stubbe.
