TUCSON, Ariz.--Arizona football coach Rich Rodriguez today hired former colleague Chris Allen as the primary football strength coach. He becomes an associate director of athletics for strength and conditioning.

Allen, 35, was director of skill development and associate director of strength and conditioning at Michigan from 2008-10 while Rodriguez was head coach, and spent five seasons (2003-07) as a member of the West Virginia strength staff as coordinator of strength and conditioning and director of skill development while Rodriguez was head coach in Morgantown.

"Chris will be a terrific asset to our program," said Rodriguez. "We've collaborated in the past and have the same goals. He knows how to get the players working together, and we'll have some strong, quick guys," he said.

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Allen was a sprinter on the WVU track team from 1997-2000 and graduated in 2000 with degrees in accounting and management information systems. He later earned a master's degree in athletic coaching education from WVU in 2005 while serving as an assistant with noted strength coach Mike Barwis.

Allen worked in the Internet technology support field in Atlanta for several years and was a volunteer strength coach at Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, Ga., before joining the WVU program in late 2002. He has been living in the Atlanta area for the past year.

His athletic and academic accomplishments include the 2000 West Virginia University Track and Field Academic Award, first-team all-conference spring honors in 1999 and 2000, academic all-conference honors from 1997 to 2000, and an annual citation as a WVU Storer Scholar Award from 1995 to 1999. He was an Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America sprint champion in 2000.

He holds certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the National Association of Speed and Explosion, USA Weightlifting Level I Sports and the American Red Cross.

Allen succeeds eight-year football strength coach Corey Edmond. He and Rodriguez will complete the football strength staff as the latter finalizes his coaching staff appointments in the next few weeks.

Christopher K. Allen was born Sept. 10, 1976.
