Women?s Tennis Opens Play at ITA Regionals

SAN DIEGO ?- The Arizona women’s tennis team opened play at the ITA regional tennis tournament, co-hosted by San Diego State University and the University of San Diego, on Thursday.  Six Wildcats made the trip, participating in both singles and doubles match play.

 

Sophomore Danielle Steinberg and freshman Natalia Toporowska opened doubles play for the Wildcats.  The two faced a tough tandem from USC, Ashley Ellis and Katja Decker-Sadowski, and lost 9-7. 

 

Earning a bye on the first day was senior Kasia Jakowlew, who will team up with junior Camelia Todorova, as well as sophomore Tina Razloznik who will partner with freshman Sydni Katz.  The two pairs hit the courts tomorrow at 9 a.m. for second-round action. 

 

On the singles side, Katz drew Pepperdine’s Tania Rice in the first round and was defeated 6-2, 6-1. 

 

Jakowlew, the lone senior at the tournament for the Cats, served past Alexandra Demidova of USD, 6-3, 6-1, but lost in the next round to No. 8 seed Alex McGoodwin, UCLA, 6-3, 6-2. 

 

Competing against Zoe Taylor of USD was Todorova, who easily advanced, 6-2, 6-1, but fell in the next round to SDSU’s Alesya Vidov, 6-3, 6-0. 

 

Razloznik put up a fight against Gina Le of CSF, but went on to lose the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

 

Freshman Natalia Toporowska faced the No. 10 seed, Pavla Mesterova of LMU in the second round after a first round bye for both players.  Toporowska fell to Mesterova 6-3, 6-1. 

 

No. 5-seeded Steinberg earned a first round bye as well, automatically advancing to the next round where she faced USC’s Ellis, beating her 6-2, 6-3.  Steinberg advances to the round of 32, which will be played on Friday at 10 a.m.   

 

The tournament continues Friday morning with the second round of the doubles tournament followed by the third and fourth rounds of the singles matches.
