Liaw’s 71 anchors solid effort on a rain-soaked moving day

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s golf team shot a three-over-par 291 Friday and moved into a tie for 10th place at the 2006 NCAA Championships at the Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.

Arizona’s three-over effort inched the Wildcats two spots up the leaderboard and into a tie with Texas A&M, UCLA and Kentucky for 10th place at six-over 870 in the field of 30 teams.  Washington leads the field by three strokes at seven-under par 857.

Once again, it was ebb and flow for Arizona on a day in which rains affected play, as the squad was three-under after nine holes, but played the back side at six over.  Regardless, the Wildcats easily made the 54-hole cut.

Junior Henry Liaw was the only UA golfer to finish under par on Friday, posting a one-under 71.  He heads into Saturday’s final round tied for 63rd place at four-over 220.

Sophomore Travis Esway remains the top-placed Wildcat, as he is tied for 16th place at one-under 215.  Esway shot a one-over 73 in the third round.  He is two strokes ahead of teammate Brian Prouty, who is tied for 39th place at two-over 218.

Ben Fox and Josh Esler are tied for 82nd and 103rd places, respectively.  Fox carded a two-over 74 and stands at six-over 222, while Esler tallied a five-over 77 Friday and is at eight-over 224.

The 2006 NCAA Championships conclude Saturday at the Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort, a par 72, 7,630-yard layout.  Arizona’s final round tee times will be announced once individual playoffs are completed.
